Questions about Midway member chat. Setup, privacy, files and plans.
Answers about adding member-to-member messaging to a Memberstack site. If your question isn't here, the setup guide covers every step.
Getting started
Midway is a drop-in member chat for Memberstack-powered sites. It adds real-time direct messages, voice notes, replies, reactions, typing indicators, and read receipts through a single iframe embed.
No backend, no SDK, no separate identity to wire up. Members chat as their existing Memberstack account, on your site, on your brand.
No. Midway hosts the whole pipeline: message delivery, storage, and the auth bridge to Memberstack. You add the embed, we handle the rest.
Yes, that's what it's built for. Midway reads your member list and ties every conversation to a real account. No second login, no second profile.
Yes, as long as your Webflow site uses Memberstack. Memberstack is the only requirement, Webflow is simply where most of these sites are built. Paste one iframe and your members get real-time direct messages and voice notes, signed in with the account they already have.
It still works. Midway needs two things: Memberstack handling your logins, and a page where you can paste an HTML embed.
WordPress, a custom Next.js or Rails app, all fine. The chat renders in an iframe, so your framework, CSS, and build tooling never come into it.
It's member chat, not an anonymous support box. Conversations are tied to real Memberstack accounts, so only your logged-in members can message each other. Direct messages, replies, reactions, and voice notes between the people who belong to your site.
Logo, company name, accent colour, and embed dimensions, all set per project from the dashboard. The chat widget renders to match the rest of your site.
Members and privacy
Yes. Turn off the Members tab, turn on chat from profile pages, and put one inbox on a members-only page with your own Memberstack ID in data-with.
Every member then gets a single chat with you and has no way to find or message anyone else. You open the same page and see all their conversations in your inbox.
Turn on unread message alerts and it works more like email: you and your members get an email when there's a reply waiting.
Yes. Both are on by default and each has its own switch in your project settings.
With online status off, members see no green dot and no "Online" label, and the information isn't sent to their browser at all.
Useful when you answer messages in your own time and don't want members to see when you're around.
No, two people share one continuous chat, however long ago a message was written.
Members can reply to a specific earlier message to keep a topic clear, search the chat by word to find something from months ago, and load older messages as far back as the chat goes.
Yes. Member-to-member blocking is built in. Once blocked, that person can't DM or send chat requests. Your members run their own boundaries.
Messages soft-delete. The bubble's gone, but replies and reactions around it stay readable. The thread doesn't fall apart because someone changed their mind.
Files and voice
Yes, on the Studio plan. Recording happens right in the browser, no app install or extension. Members tap, talk, send.
Attachments stay live for 90 days, then auto-delete to keep storage predictable.
The messages themselves remain, so reply chains and conversation history don't fall apart, only the file is removed.
Attachments are available from Starter, with 15 GB per project, and 50 GB per project on Studio.
Image and file sharing starts on Starter, with 15 GB of storage per project, and Studio gets 50 GB per project. The per-file cap is 10 MB. Attachments older than 90 days are automatically removed so the cap stays usable. The messages themselves stay, only the file goes.
Plans and billing
Yes. Free is genuinely free, forever.
One project, real-time direct messages with replies, reactions, and read receipts, and a small "Powered by Midway" badge in the inbox.
Image and file sharing come with Starter, and Studio includes every feature, voice messages among them. No credit card to start.
A member who opens the inbox at least once in a calendar month.
It isn't everyone synced from Memberstack, and it isn't how many people are chatting at the same time.
If 20 of your 200 members open the inbox in October, that's 20 for October, whether they sent a message or only read one. Someone who opens it ten times still counts once.
You count too, if you use the inbox yourself. The count goes back to zero on the 1st of each month (UTC), and you can see it anytime on the Plan tab of your dashboard.
Flat monthly per plan. Starter is $19.99/month, Studio is $49.99/month. No per-member fees, no surprise overages. You pick the plan that fits the number of projects, the branding, and the features you need.
We never auto-bill you. As you get close to your monthly active-member limit, and again when you reach it, we email you.
On Starter and Studio, messaging keeps working for everyone past the limit: your inbox temporarily falls back to default Midway styling and the "Powered by Midway" badge, and your saved logo, colours, and theme come back on the 1st or as soon as you upgrade.
On Free there's 10% of leeway past the limit. After that, anyone new that month sees a "Messaging is paused" message until the 1st, while members who already opened the inbox keep chatting.
Upgrading lets everyone in straight away.
